This Day in History 📸

On June 21, 1788, the United States Constitution went into effect after New Hampshire became the ninth state to ratify the document. The ballpoint pen wouldn’t be invented for another 100 years, so how did our Founding Fathers write our country’s supreme set of laws?

You likely know a quill was involved, specifically a goose quill. However, the ink used is less well known. Scribes used iron gall ink made with tannic acid (from oak galls), iron (from nails or iron scraps), and a binder (typically gum arabic). According to the National Archives, the ink looked light in color when first applied to parchment, but darkened to a purplish black through oxidization. -Annie Colbert, Editor-in-Chief

Dear Popular Science… 🙋

This week we asked: Have you ever been whale watching?

EK told us:

I was on a whale trip to see them and we came across a big area of krill. First came squid, a free for all. All the hungry creatures were excited about the krill, and then all of a sudden, we were surrounded by blue whales. They appeared to be turquoise and were beautiful. Eventually they all sounded at the same time and we were surrounded by whale tails. An unforgettable experience.
